Maspik vs reCAPTCHA: stop spam without the puzzle
reCAPTCHA checks whether a visitor looks like a bot. Maspik checks whether a submission looks like spam, whoever typed it. They solve overlapping problems in different ways, and plenty of sites use both.
Which one fits you?
Choose Maspik if
- You do not want any widget, badge or challenge on your forms.
- You get spam typed or pasted by people, which a bot check does not look at.
- You want setup to be install and activate, with no keys to create.
Choose reCAPTCHA if
- Your forms are hammered by automated bots and you want a dedicated bot check from Google.
- You are comfortable with Google scripts on your pages and a Google Cloud account.
- Volume stays within the free allowance.
Maspik vs reCAPTCHA, side by side
| Feature | Maspik | reCAPTCHA |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Spam rules, honeypots and reputation checks that run in the background. | A Google service that scores or challenges each visitor to detect bots. |
| What visitors see | Nothing. No CAPTCHA, no puzzle. | Depends on the version and setup: a checkbox or image challenge (v2) or an invisible score with a badge (v3). |
| Cost | Free plugin; Pro from $19/year. No per-submission fee. | Free up to 10,000 assessments a month on the Essentials tier; billing required above that, per Google’s billing page. |
| Setup | Install and activate. | Create keys in Google’s console and connect them in each form plugin. |
| Third-party scripts | Most checks local; cloud layers optional. | Loads Google scripts on pages that show the form. |
| Reads the message? | Yes: keywords, emails, phones, URLs, links, emoji and more, per field. | No. It evaluates the visitor, not the text. |

Our view on CAPTCHAs for lead forms
We recommend starting without one. A challenge is friction for the people you most want to hear from, and a lost enquiry costs more than a spam message you can delete. Use Maspik’s invisible layers, watch the spam log for a week, and add a bot check only if automated traffic turns out to be something they cannot handle.
Why a bot check alone is not enough
A bot check can stop automation, but it cannot tell a genuine enquiry from a sales pitch typed by a person, or from a message submitted through a real browser that passed the challenge. Content rules close that gap. Going the other way, rules alone do not replace a bot check on forms that bots hit at very high volume. That is why the practical answer is often both, with Maspik doing the content and reputation work and the CAPTCHA as a first gate if you need one.
